Birthmark removal surgery blog...
2/20/08:
The patient has a port wine stain on his face, a pinkish discoloration about three inches in diameter. It is obvious and has caused social anxiety and confidence problems.
He is looking for birthmark removal sugery to be permament and to not leave any "evidence" behind, given that it will be performed on his face.
In taking to the cosmetic surgeon, the patient realizes that laser surgery is his best choice.

In the consultation with the cosmetic surgeon, the patient's only concern is that the birthmark removal procedure will leave scars. With laser surgery versus grafting, the chances are low, but he is still concerned. The cosmetic surgeon agrees to use a slightly lower intensirt of laser for the procedure to hopefully do the job and ensure no scarring. Worst comes to worst he says, they can go over it again to fully remove the birthmark. The patient leaves the cosmetic center energized and looking forward to his cosmetic surgery procedure!

The surgery is scheduled. The patient knows to baby his skin to that it is resilient and generally in good shape before his birthmark removal procedure. He also begins taking vitamins C and E and generally eating well so that his immune system and general health are up to par for the healing that will take place after the procedure. Psychologically he finds himself peering at his birthmark in the mirror more often, excited to visualize the new skin that will replace his port wine stain.

Surgery soon. He's told to get a few good night's sleep in a row. He's told to eat right. He puts moisturizers on his skin so it is great shape and healthy. Finally, he is told to relax and visualize the positive outcome!

The surgery was today. It went exactly as planned. The port wine stain birthmark was removed using laser surgery. The surgeon says there will be no scarring, and any discoloration including redness will fade. The patient can't wait to look, but the area is heavily bandaged. Actually, he is told that even if he did look, it would look so sore that he wouldn;t know (yet!) that his brithmark has been sucessfully removed!
